Trying to replacing lookup with itself generates 'An application error has occurred. Your session has been reset' error

Trying to replacing lookup with itself generates 'An application error has occurred. Your session has been reset' error.

To reproduce:
1. go to Administration - Lookups
2. select a Species, and click Replace
3. in the Search field, enter the same species name, and click Find

The error will be displayed, and the following stack will appear in the Tomcat console:
